We reviewed the genetic parameter estimates carried out from 1992 to 2006 for height increment in genetic tests of Norway
spruce and Scots pine, to describe patterns of genetic variation, heritability, and genetic correlations. The material included
seedling and clonal tests in Sweden, aged between 5 and 20 years. Multiple regression was used to explore relationships between
parameter values and test environments. Results showed moderate narrow-sense heritabilities ([^(h)]2 {\hat{h}^2} : mean =0.29 in Norway spruce; mean =0.23 in Scots pine) that decreased with test site latitude for both species. In Norway
spruce, [^(h)]2 {\hat{h}^2} increased with better growth and decreased with tree age, while for Scots pine, [^(h)]2 {\hat{h}^2} increased with tree age and southward transfer. The additive genetic coefficient of variation (; mean 15%), in Norway spruce, decreased with growth as well as site latitude. in Scots pine (mean =8.5%) increased with southward transfer and more southerly test latitude. of 0.92 and 0.85, respectively. Corresponding across-sites estimates were on average lower. Genetic parameters were better
expressed on favorable sites, at younger ages in Norway spruce and at older ages in Scots pine. The results imply that gain
calculations should be based on different parameters in the two species. For maximizing genetic gain in the Swedish breeding
program, testing times could be shorter for Norway spruce than for Scots pine. The investigation showed a large variation

The sustainable use of natural and agricultural biodiversity in the diet can be instrumental to preserve existing food biodiversity,
address malnutrition, and mitigate adverse effects of dietary changes worldwide. This systematic review of literature summarizes
the current evidence on the contribution of plant and animal biodiversity to human diets in terms of energy intake, micronutrient
intake, and dietary diversification. Peer-reviewed studies were searched in ten databases using pre-defined search terms.
Only original studies assessing food biodiversity and dietary intake were included, resulting in a total of 34 studies. 7,
14, and 17 studies reported information in relation to energy intake, micronutrient intake, and dietary diversification, respectively.
In general, locally available foods were found to be important sources of energy, micronutrients, and dietary diversification
in the diet of particularly rural and forest communities of highly biodiverse ecosystems. The current evidence shows local
food biodiversity as important contributor of nutritious diets. Findings are, however, limited to populations living in highly
biodiverse areas. Research on the contribution of biodiversity in diets of industrialized and urban settings needs more attention.
Instruments are needed that would more appropriately measure the dietary contribution of local biodiversity. 相似文献

Background: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori has declined over recent decades in developed countries. The increasing prevalence with age is largely because of a birth cohort effect. We previously observed a decline in H. pylori prevalence in 6‐ to 8‐year‐old Dutch children from 19% in 1978 to 9% in 1993. Knowledge about birth‐cohort‐related H. pylori prevalence is relevant as a predictor for the future incidence of H. pylori‐associated conditions. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the birth cohort effect of H. pylori observed between 1978 and 1993 continued in subsequent years. Methods: Anti‐H. pylori IgG antibodies and anti‐CagA IgG antibodies were determined in serum samples obtained in 2005/2006 from 545 Dutch children aged 7–9 years who participated in the Prevention and Incidence of Asthma and Mite Allergy birth cohort. The H. pylori and CagA antibodies were determined by enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays that have been extensively validated in children, with a 94% sensitivity for H. pylori colonization and a 92.5% sensitivity for colonization with a cagA‐positive strain. Results: Of the 545 children (M/F 300/245), most (91.5%) were of Dutch descent. The H. pylori positivity rate was 9% (95% CI 6.6–11.4%). The prevalence of CagA antibodies was 0.9% (95% CI 0.1–1.6%). No significant differences were demonstrated in H. pylori and cagA prevalence in relation to gender or ethnicity. Conclusion: The prevalence of H. pylori in childhood has remained stable in the Netherlands from 1993 to 2005, suggesting a stabilization of the previously decreasing trend in subsequent birth cohorts. This finding may reflect stabilization in determinants such as family size, housing, and hygienic conditions (or offset by day care). If confirmed in other populations in developed countries, it implies that colonization with H. pylori will remain common in the coming decades. Remarkably however, the rate of colonization with cagA+H. pylori strains has become very low, consistent with prior observations that cagA+ strains are disappearing in Western countries. 相似文献

In 1993, four residents of a retirement community in middle Tennessee were hospitalized with symptoms of ehrlichiosis causing community managers to implement mitigation methods to reduce tick numbers. For the past four years, managers have utilized 4-poster acaricide applicators that aim to reduce disease risk to residents by killing ticks that feed on deer. To determine the efficacy of this technique, we assessed Amblyomma americanum abundance in the vicinity of the devices by dragging 400 m vegetation transects once per month while ticks were active. In 2009, adult tick activity peaked in May, nymphal tick activity peaked in June, and larval activity peaked in September. Close to 4-poster devices, larval, nymphal, and adult tick abundances were reduced by 91%, 68%, and 49%, respectively (larval and nymphal p<0.001, adult p=0.005), relative to nearby untreated areas. No significant reduction in nymphal or adult A. americanum ticks was evident >300 m from 4-poster devices, however a ~90% reduction in larvae was observed to our sampling limit (400 m). At the low density at which these devices are currently being used (average distance between devices = 6.6 km), we conclude that they will have little large-scale effect on the health risk posed by ticks in this community. 相似文献

The molecular architecture of centromere-specific nucleosomes containing histone variant CenH3 is controversial. We have biochemically reconstituted two distinct populations of nucleosomes containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae CenH3 (Cse4). Reconstitution of octameric nucleosomes containing histones Cse4/H4/H2A/H2B is robust on noncentromere DNA, but inefficient on AT-rich centromere DNA. However, nonhistone Scm3, which is required for Cse4 deposition in?vivo, facilitates in?vitro reconstitution of Cse4/H4/Scm3 complexes on AT-rich centromere sequences. Scm3 has a nonspecific DNA binding domain that shows preference for AT-rich DNA and a histone chaperone domain that promotes specific loading of Cse4/H4. In live cells, Scm3-GFP is enriched at centromeres in all cell cycle phases. Chromatin immunoprecipitation confirms that Scm3 occupies centromere DNA throughout the cell cycle, even when Cse4 and H4 are temporarily dislodged in S phase. These findings suggest a model in which centromere-bound Scm3 aids recruitment of Cse4/H4 to assemble and maintain an H2A/H2B-deficient centromeric nucleosome. 相似文献

Species rich semi-natural grasslands are disappearing across Europe, affecting invertebrate diversity negatively. In NW Spain,
the recent abandonment of traditional farming practices and the gradual decrease in grazing pressures are reducing the number
and extent of montane grasslands. In this context, we investigated the composition of carabid beetle (Coleoptera, Carabidae)
assemblages that inhabit semi-natural grasslands situated in long-term managed oak and beech forested landscapes. According
to their spatial arrangement, the studied grasslands were classified into: (1) interior or gap grasslands (small and completely
surrounded by continuous forest) and (2) exterior grasslands (large and connected to a variety of habitat types). Our results
indicate that, within each forested landscape, the gap and exterior grasslands harboured particular carabid assemblages (i.e.
exclusive or abundantly collected species), which were also distinct from the surrounding forest carabid fauna. Dissimilarities
between gap and exterior grasslands in each landscape suggest great carabid diversity at the regional scale. We also detected
species-specific responses as several carabids were mainly associated with gap or exterior grasslands. Consequently, in highly
modified forested landscapes, semi-natural grassland remnants may constitute great value for the protection of the carabid
fauna. Specifically, we recommend conservation strategies that preserve variety in grassland features and maintain proper
management activities to prevent the loss of specialised species and a decrease in regional carabid diversity. 相似文献

Matrix projection models are among the most widely used tools in plant ecology. However, the way in which plant ecologists use and interpret these models differs from the way in which they are presented in the broader academic literature. In contrast to calls from earlier reviews, most studies of plant populations are based on < 5 matrices and present simple metrics such as deterministic population growth rates. However, plant ecologists also cautioned against literal interpretation of model predictions. Although academic studies have emphasized testing quantitative model predictions, such forecasts are not the way in which plant ecologists find matrix models to be most useful. Improving forecasting ability would necessitate increased model complexity and longer studies. Therefore, in addition to longer term studies with better links to environmental drivers, priorities for research include critically evaluating relative/comparative uses of matrix models and asking how we can use many short-term studies to understand long-term population dynamics. 相似文献
